Welcome to seven acres

Seven Acres Local Nature Reserve is an area of greenspace in the community of Breightmet in Bolton, northwest England. The site is based around Bradshaw Brook and is a very popular area amongst the local community for recreation, engaging with nature and getting some peace and tranquillity. However, the role of Seven Acres for the local community in the past has been very different.

To investigate this role, a group of young people from St. Catherine’s Academy (formerly Withins High School) which is close to Seven Acres LNR, participated in a project to explore the heritage of the site. To find out what information they discovered, and the ways in which they went about discovering it, follow the various links from this page.

The project was led by Lancashire Wildlife Trust and St. Catherine’s Academy. A £25,000 Young Roots grant was secured from Heritage Lottery Fund to allow the project to take place. Other parties involved in the project were The Friends of Seven Acres, Bolton Museum, Bolton Archaeology Group and Bolton Council.
