Mining Work

Mining Works

To the untrained eye it is very difficult to see signs of the legacy of mining and so when we started the project we had no idea that Seven Acres had been an area where mining had occurred in the past. Therefore, we had to find out what material was mined at Seven Acres and for what the material was used. We also wanted to understand what the conditions would have been like for local people working in the mines and whether or not any young people would have worked in the mines.

To discover about the mining industry at Seven Acres we took part in a research session at Bolton Museum to explore where the mines were dug on the site and what material they mined. We learned about how they transported the material and how this is reflected in the present community through street names, particularly Waggon Road. We then visited The Museum of Science and Industry to learn more about working conditions in the mine and what types of machinery where to dig the material and make the mine safe.
